Making Small Bathrooms Feel Larger
When remodeling a smaller bathroom, there are various tips and techniques you can do to create the feeling of the small bathroom space being larger.
The bathroom in the picture incorporates many of these elements well.
When one side of the tile is longer than the other you create the effects of stripes. Stripes make rooms feel larger in the direction of the stripe. In this case, the tiles on the wall run from the front of the room to the back of the room, thereby creating the feeling the room is longer than it really is.
Shower Instead of Bathtub
The bathtub apron (the apron is the side of the tub that is visible to someone standing outside the tub) creates a visual block between one part of the room (outside the tub) and another ) inside the tub. A shower curb does that much less, precisely because it’s shorter.
Frameless Shower Doors
The metal frame around the shower door also creates a visual barrier. The frameless panel and door eliminates that. Being able to see further into the shower without the visual obstruction of the frame helps the room feel larger.
By virtue of being open, open shelving helps a room feel larger. When the storage cabinet has doors, the cabinet feels as if it intrudes into the room the depth of the cabinet. When the cabinet has no doors, even though it does intrude into the cabinet the depth of the cabinet, it feels more open.
Vanity Does Not Touch Floor
A great trick for making a small bathroom feel larger is to get stuff off the floor. In this case the vanity does not touch the floor. You can also install wall mount toilets that do not touch the floor either.
Wall Length Mirror
Big mirrors also help with this optical illusion. When we see deeper into a room, it feels bigger, even when what we’re seeing is a reflection of the room itself. For greater effect, the mirror in this bathroom could be taller.
