When Low Maintenance is Important to You
First let us define what low maintenance means. To me, it means:
- Easy to clean
- Easy to repair
- Cheap to repair
Avoid Any Surface That Needs to EVER be Resealed
No natural stone, no slate, no grout lines. It means solid engineered stone countertops with built in sinks (as shown), single piece engineered stone shower surrounds (Swanstone for example), single piece shower pans, and bamboo flooring (if you’re putting wood in your bathroom, go with bamboo as it’s naturally moisture resistant).
Ignore the fact that the pictured countertop/sink is actually concrete. Engineered stone with a similar appearance is available.
Avoid Intricate and Expensive Fixtures
Grohe bathroom fixtures are nice, no doubt about it, but when it’s time to repair and replace, they’re more difficult than more common brands and more expensive. For low maintenance stick to more widely used brands such as Delta, Price Pfister, etc.
Smooth Frameless Cabinets
Avoid ornamentation on your bathroom vanity. Get a vanity where the drawer fronts and doors and completely flat and frameless. Not flat panel, no panel.
Get a two piece toilet
While one piece toilets are nice as they require less space and maybe even can be fit under a countertop, they’re more difficult and more expensive to service, which will be needed eventually.
Non ornamental faucets
Get the smoothest faucets and shower valve trim you can find. The easiest to keep clean.
