Bathroom Remodeling – Cupertino – Cartridge Faucets
The lead article (the table of contents if you will) is titled Bathroom Remodeling.
This article is also part of a min-series about faucets.
A cartridge faucet has some similarities to a compression faucet, such as:
- Both have two handles, one for the hot and one for the cold
- Both have similar looking devices underneath the handles that move up and down to control the flow rate
- For a compression faucet the device is called a valve stem
- For a cartridge faucet the device is called a cartridge
What is different is how the device works.
In a compression faucet, the flow of water is determined because on the bottom of the valve stem is a washer that pushes down on a circle edge or lip that determines how much water, if any, flows.
In a cartridge faucet, the flow up water up from the bottom of the faucet into the cartridge is always open and as you turn the handle the cartridge rises up and down lining up holes in the cartridge with holes in the faucet housing.
The degrees to which these holes line up determine how much water, if any, flows.
Cartridge faucets are much more reliable than compression faucets, but the cartridges do eventually wear out and need to be replaced.
However they are readily available at OSH for almost every faucet in the valley, and for the most specialized faucets, cartridges can be ordered at speciality plumbing supply houses, of which the best two in the valley are Barron Park Plumbing supply in Mountain View and Conleff’s in Santa Clara.
