This post describes the mechanism where by they work. How they generate steam.

First and foremost, you can not turn your existing shower stall into a steam shower. If you do, the moisture from the steam will wreck havoc in a short amount of time.
Never forget that small amounts of water over long periods of time can destroy the wood behind the tiles and under the floor.
The time to install one is during your bathroom remodel when you’re rebuilding your shower anyway.

For now…. here is the basic and requires setup:
- Enhanced moisture barrier for shower (as mentioned above).
- Steam generator.
- Dedicated electrical circuit.
- Steam outlet
The steam generator is a unit into which cold water flows, and is heated to turn it into steam. These come in various sizes and you need the right size for the size of your shower and the materials in which it is finished.
They do not run for very long at a time, but while they run they draw a lot of electrical current. For that reason your steam generator needs a dedicated electrical circuit similar to how a whirlpool bathtub needs one.
The controls are mounted inside the shower so you can adjust them (and turn them off) without having to leave the warm steam shower.
