Why is natural stone flooring so much more expensive than ceramic tile? Because it’s natural stone.
Ceramic tile is created through a manufacturing process using (comparatively) less expensive raw ingredients. For natural stone flooring, the natural stone IS the raw ingredient. It is found in a natural state, mined, cut, polished, and made ready.
At Lowe’s, you can find ceramic tiles that cost under $1 a square foot.
The only natural stone flooring Lowe’s carries that costs under a dollar is for pieces that are 6 inches on a side.
Right now Lowe’s carries 8 different ceramic tile varieties that cost less than $1. For natural stone there are only 11 varieties that cost less than $10.
However, the extra cost is not just the initial purchase. With ceramic tile you need reseal the grout every 12 to 18 months. With natural stone you must reseal the entire surface.
Having said that, the natural beauty of ceramic stone often more than makes up for the increased cost.
Natural stone comes in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and finishes, and just plain feels good under your bare feet (at least it feels good under my bare feet).
Something will enjoy about natural stone is you have some of the CA outside on the inside. Fake stone both looks and feels fake. With the natural stone, you have the best look around and know it feels proper on your feet.
