Eggshell is a sheen or finish, not a color.
Eggshell paint comes in many different colors, all of which are somewhat muted or subdued.
Eggshell finish has a little sheen, by which I mean it’s not completely flat, but does reflect light a little, but very little.
This sheen works very well for walls, but not trim around windows and doors, as visually we seem to prefer a higher sheen on trim work.
The biggest functional advantage of eggshell over flat is you can wash it without harming the surface.
When you wish a very low to no sheen finish for your bathroom walls, eggshell is your best choice due to it’s low sheen, being somewhat moisture resistant (compared to flat), and the relative ease with which it cleans off.
