Bathroom Remodeling – Palo Alto – Tub and shower valves
The lead article (the table of contents if you will) is titled Bathroom Remodeling.
Your bath and/or shower have both a hot and a cold water pipe coming in.
You mix how much hot and how much cold you want to bring you your preferred water volume at your preferred temperature.
If your tub/shower has one hot handle and one cold handle, you have two valves (one for each) and you mix the hot, cold, and water pressure by adjusting the two valves.
If you have a single handle tub/shower, you have a more sophisticated type of valve commonly known as a shower valve (I’m guessing the single handle valve came into common usage when we starting installing showers).
The main point is they have mechanical parts and rubber washers and O rings, all of which fails over time.
The washers and O rings need replacement ever once in a while, and the if you live in an area of very hard water, the mineral content of the water can wear down the mechanical parts over time.
Generally a leaking tub/shower can be fixed by replacing the valve cartridge (that which the washers and O rings are attached to, but in rare cases, the valve itself is fault and needs to be repalced (which is a very big deal as the wall has to be opened up).
So…. when you are selecting materials for your bathroom remodel, you want to select a shower valve that has a history of being reliable, and most importantly, don’t buy a cheap valve.
A cheap valve will cost you more in the long run as it will fail sooner requiring a $1,000 repair to open the wall and replace it.
This is one example where the cheapest product today is the most expensive over five years.
And speaking of your bathroom remodeling….. we would love an opportunity to be of service to you.
