The primary purpose of primers are:
- cover the prior color, preventing the old color from bleeding through
- contain bonding agents so the new paint adheres well
There are different types of primers for use in different situations.
I’m personally very fond of the Zinser brand having had great results with it, but no matter what, get a premium brand.
Cheap primer is more expensive than expensive primer because proper coverage takes more coats and more time.
Oil primers have a very strong odor, are very slow drying, and must be cleaned with minearl oil, but………………
Do an excellent job of covering and leave a very smooth finish to work with.
Is generally a preferred primer for bathrooms as they provide an added layer of moisture resistance and your bathroom is the wettest room in your house.
Latex primers are fast drying, clean up with water, and are now available in low and no VOC formulas.
They are not as brittle as oil or shellac based primers and provide a surface that more resistant to cracking.
They are generally best for priming bare wood but will sometimes raise the grain (so test first).
Shellac primers are fast drying and require denatured alcohol for thinning and cleanup.
They have an incredible strong odor, but do the best job of blocking stains and dark colors from bleeding through.
