Challenges of Remodeling Small Bathrooms
Remodeling small bathrooms requires strategies not needed for larger rooms. This is simply a result of having less square footage to work with and having to make the most of what you have.
Here are a few ideas to try on.
Go Low Profile
This includes round (rather than oblong) toilets, shorter single piece toilets, pedestal sinks, and even mini storage cabinets in the walls. Yes they are only 15 inches wide and 3 1/2 inches deep, but they do not protrude into the room at all.
Large Floor Tiles
The worst thing you can do to a small bathroom is create a feeling of business. Fewer larger floor tiles creates a more spacious feel than more numerous ones.
Lots of Light
Install excellent ambient and task lighting, and lots of it. When a space is well lit, it feels larger. Dark bathrooms always feels smaller.
Believe it or not, stripes create the illusion of stretched space. You can create stripes with many materials. Paint and wall paper are obvious choices, but you can also create stripes with your flooring.
If rather than 18×18 tiles you install 18×9 tiles, you create stripes on the floor. The optical illusion is space is elongated in the direction the stripes run, so to make the room feel deeper, run them front to back and to make the room feel wider run them side to side.
You can also use the ceiling. If it matches your decor, you can install fake decorative beams on the ceiling (ones that don’t stick too far down). These fake decorative beams form stripes.
