Look for ADA compliant fixtures

The Americans With Disabilities Act spells out guidelines for many products, among them bathroom fixtures. You may not care to read the specifications called out by the act, but your fixture manufacturer will have. You will find ADA compliant toilets that are taller than standard to make it easier for people who have trouble standing unassisted; tub enclosures with built-in grab bars and faucets that turn on and off hands-free or with a single touch for hands that suffer the pain of arthritis.

Walk in tubs

Bathing alone is something most adults don’t want to give up. There are a variety of walk in tubs on the market with self-sealing entries so they remain watertight. Some of these tubs fit in nearly the same footprint as a standard tub, while others include luxury touches like extra depth and width, jets, or seating for two.

Shower stalls with no lip

If you are looking at a new shower stall, try to find one with a low lip at the entrance to minimize the risk of tripping or falling when you enter or exit the stall.
