When selecting bathroom remodelers, it’s a good idea to discuss your preliminary plans with them before agreeing to a contract. You need a reputable and experienced bathroom remodeler who has done projects that include features you have your heart set on.
For example, if you have your heart set on ceramic tile, but a particular firm has to outsource the work to someone, you may end up paying a higher price. In addition, you may not have a chance to check references or view the subs work samples.
A bathroom remodeler should be able to help guide you to the correct tile for your application. They can make recommendations about tile grade, size and material based on their experience, and show you pictures of completed projects so you can judge the work and expertise that they bring to the table.
Tile will probably be one of the largest expenditures in your bathroom renovation project. Make sure that if the remodeling firm includes the cost of the tlle in your proposal that the allowance per square foot that they quote is adequate to cover the grade of tile you need in the area. Some remodelers prefer that the homeowner purchase the tile themselves from pre-approved distributors to avoid cost overruns.
One of the nicest things about tile is the ability to customize the final appearance by adding in listellos, borders or decorative tiles. Most decorative accent tiles and borders are priced per piece, rather than by square foot like regular tile. Most bathroom remodelers do not include these accent tiles in the basic quote, since the price per piece varies so widely. If you think you’ll want to add these types of decorative tile, leave money in your budget to cover the extra cost.
