Now that you are getting ready for your remodel and you are putting together ideas to design your bathroom, consider how patterns and colors affect your perception of the room length and width.
Make Your Room Feel Longer
- For your floor tiles, use rectangular tiles instead of square tiles and install them so they run lengthwise down the room.
- Put horizontal stripes (it doesn’t matter in what form: wallpaper, paint, tiles, etc) running along the walls (across, not up and down) and run them in the same direction as the floor tiles. For the opposite walls, do not stripe them, paint them solid in a light neutral color.
Make Your Room Feel Wider
- Flip the tiles and stripes ninety degrees so the long side of the tiles run across the width of the room and the stripes on the walls run only in the same direction as the tiles.
If you wish to test this before you commit to your remodel, get some painters tape (it comes in many colors now) and use it to create stripes on your walls. Live with them for a few days or weeks, then change then. Do this until you have a sense of how stripes effect your perception of the room size.
