Electrical Wiring – Cupertino – Outlet Circuits and Lighting Circuits
The first article in this series on electrical wiring acts as the table of contents for the series.
Outlet circuits and lighting circuits DO NOT MIX.
- There is actually one exception to this hard and fast rule which is discussed below.
The reason is devices you plug into outlets draw more current than light bulbs do.
Lighting circuits are rated for 15 amps, use 14 gauge romex (white jacket) and a 15 amp circuit breaker.
Outlet circuits are rated for 20 amps, use 12 gauge romex (yellow jacket) and a 20 amp circuit breaker.
It is OK for the wires to share a junction box (as in the picture) but it is never OK to connect an outlet circuit to a lighting circuit.
The one exception is the electrical code now requires bathrooms to be on circuits not shared with other rooms.
You must use twelve gauge and a 20 amp breaker for these bathroom circuits.
If you desire professional help with your electrical wiring needs, we would love an opportunity to be of service.
- , and that is bathrooms now have to be on a dedicated circuit where they do mix, and you must use twelve gauge wire.
