Electrical Wiring – Palo Alto – What is a junction box?
The first article in this series on electrical wiring acts as the table of contents for the series.
Simply put, a junction box is where incoming wires join to switches, outlets, and outgoing wires.
The electrical code requires all wire splices be:
- Contained within a junction box
- Accessible (which means you can not bury a box in a wall but you can put on a blank cover)
The reasons for this are both safety and maintainability – if there is going to be an issue of splices opening (which leaves a hot wire somewhere) or shorting (which means a breaker trips and won’t reset), there issues are put where they are easily accessed and fixed.
The picture to the right shows a “three gang” box, capable of accommodating three switches, three outlets, or any combination thereof.
As it’s a three gang box, it likely contains three circuits, which means three of the incoming wires contain are hot.
If you would benefit from professional help with your electrical wiring needs, we would very much appreciate an opportunity to be of service.
