This may seem a strange post for a remodeling blog, but the fact is many of us have our most creative thoughts while taking showers.
Why? Can this benefit of showering be encouraged?
The first component is dopamine.
You probably think I’m making this up, but I’m not.
Neuroscience has concluded that the more dopamine we release into our bodies the more creative we are.
Taking a warm shower is one way to have your body release more dopamine. others are exercise, others are performing repetitive tasks you know so well you do that on auto pilot, such as driving home.
However, dopamine is not enough. You need a second component and that is a relaxing distraction.
Relaxation is known to be critical to creativity and doing a relaxing task you’ve done a thousand times before provides an excellent method of your conscious awareness focusing on something other than the questions or issues at hand.
In these moments of dopamine enhanced relaxed distractions, our unconscious minds (which are constantly working on our issues and questions) have a quiet period in which to be heard, and that is why great ideas “bubble up” while you’re taking a shower.
Can you improve this?
You should be able to and you should be able to by virtue of creating a space that is more relaxing to you. Are there certain smells or sounds that induce relaxation in you. If so, find a way to add them to the space in which you shower.
The next idea may seem a little weird, but take a note pad into the shower with you. Maybe not literally into the shower, but close enough so that when an answer bubbles up you can reach out, find the notepad, and jot it down.
This eliminates the phenomenon we’ve all experienced of lost ideas.
