Are energy efficient windows worth the extra cost?
Most definitely and for two primary reasons:
- The incremental cost of the energy efficient window is minimal, while it will help you save money on your heating bill for years to come.
- The energy efficient characteristics of the window makes your bathroom more comfortable. Heat leaks out slower, the room stays warmer longer.
What makes energy efficient windows efficient?
The windows are dual panes and between the two panes is a gas that acts as a great insulator. This slows down the transfer of heat through the window.
Newer energy efficient windows simply seal better. They close tighter. Older windows come in a variety of styles; all (at least most) of which seal poorly. Wood window frames, single pane aluminum sliders, single pane aluminum crack windows, all seal poorly. By contract the newer vinyl double paned windows are almost air tight.
Low E stands for low emissivity. This means the window pane is coated with a material that reflects both ultraviolet light and infrared red. Ultraviolet light is a higher frequency than visible light and is what causes fabric to fade over time. Infrared light is a lower frequency than visible light and is what causes sunlight to heat your home through your windows and sunny days.
In summary, energy efficient lights ARE worth the extra expense, for the reasons stated above and in the ways stated above.
