Disadvantage: porous stone that needs to be periodically resealed.
Travertine is a natural stone from the limestone family that has been used in building since ancient times.
Advantage: Like slate, slightly rought.
Disadvantage: Like slate, porous.
These are man made tiles that are kiln dried and made to uniform sizes and thickness.
Advantage: Less expensive than natural stone, and comes in almost endless variety.
Disadvantage: Many tiles do not need to be resealed, but grout always does, as grout is a form of coarse concrete.
Concrete is a mixture of water, cement, gravel, sand, and air, which comes in a variety of coarseness and finishes.
Advantage: Fairly cheap and very durable.
Disadvantage: As all buildings settle, concrete floors inevitably crack, so if you wish concrete, a pattern in which hairline cracks are easily hidden is a great idea.
