Even though you are not planning to build your own kitchen cabinets for your kitchen remodel, it pays to know some about how cabinets are constructed.
Why? So you can make better decisions about the trade offs; cost, durability, expected lifespan, etc.
This article describes the anatomy of a cabinet.
The picture on the right is a bit crowded and has to be expanded to see the detail, but the main concepts concerning cabinet construction are:
When the kitchen cabinets have wood pieces at the front which are visible around the edges of the door when the doors are closed.
The frame pieces that run horizontal at the top and bottom of the cabinet.
The frame pieces that run vertical on the left and right (and sometimes center) of the the cabinet.
When there is no visible wood around the edges of the door the cabinet is “unframed”.
The indent at the bottom of the cabinet that allow your feet to fit underneath the front edge of the cabinet.
Although there is more to know, these are the main points, and more details about cabinet construction is available in other articles.
