Considerations for Planning a Successful Kitchen Remodel
First, let’s define what “successful” means. I go with….
A successful remodel project strikes the best balance between meeting your functional needs, your aesthetic needs, and your budget, and is completed with minimal to no surprises or delays.
I find it useful to think in terms of every remodel project being a balancing act between three things:
- Quality of finished outcome
It almost never fails during a project that changes are made. When changes are made to one of those three things, the other two are affected. For that reason, I intentionally use the phrase “strikes the best balance”.

What is the scope of your remodel?
Criteria #1 is to define how much you remove before you start putting things back together. Are we talking replacing the countertops and the cabinets, or are we tearing things down to the studs and subfloor and making changes to the use of space, requiring the moving of plumbing and electrical wiring?
How will your remodel completing your lifestyle?
Sit down with your entire family and make a list of what you want, both in terms of functions and aesthetics.
If you have young children or for several years to come will need a well lit place to do homework while you simultaneously provide help and make dinner, your needs are very different from those of the empty nesters who wants a more cozy space in which to cook and eat and occasionally have the kids and grand children over for dinner.
Do you entertain often?
Do you normally cook alone or do two of your generally do this together.
These types of considerations will determine how your space needs to be laid out.
