Kitchen Cabinet Basic Building Blocks
When working with a designer to put together your kitchen cabinet design, there are three basic building blocks you will be working with.
There are the bottom cabinets that sit on the floor and on which your countertop is later installed. Any cabinet under a countertop is a base cabinet, including kitchen islands which are made of nothing but base cabinets.
These are sometimes referred to as lower cabinets.
In the diagram on the top right, the base cabinets are all the counter height cabinets that touch the floor.
As the name implies, wall cabinets are mounted on the wall and do not touch the floor. They are commonly referred to as upper cabinets. In the image they are the ones that are mounted above the base cabinets.
Tall or Pantry Cabinets
Again, the name pretty much says it all. In the image there is one pantry cabinet on the right. It sits on the floor and runs up the wall to the height of upper cabinets.
