Kitchen Cabinet Construction Methods
Kitchen cabinet construction methods refers to the various ways the cabinet boxes and drawers are put together. The various ways the different pieces are secured to each other.
A rabbet joint is like a dado joint where one side is open. It’s for joining two pieces of wood at right angles where one piece fits into the notch or “shelf” created in the other piece.
A doweled joint is very common with furniture where you assemble it after you buy it (think IKEA) as it easy joint for an unskilled person to line things up. Holes are drilled into the edge of one piece, and through another piece, the wooden dowels are inserted to hold the two pieces together.
A butt joint is where two pieces of wood are simply butted together (they directly touch in the same plane) and are then fastened with glue, nails, or screws. As you can imagine, this is not a very secure type of joint.
