Overview of Kitchen Cabinet Materials
The kitchen cabinet box (as in not the doors and drawer fronts) are commonly made of MDF, particle board, or plywood. Solid wood panels are rarely used for the box for two primary reasons: 1) solid wood is more expensive, 2) solid wood warps.
The doors and drawer fronts can also be made of these materials as well as solid wood. Typically a cherry cabinet is made of solid cherry doors and drawer fronts while the box panels are plywood with a cherry veneer. It is also possible that a higher end cabinet is made a plywood that in turn is made of cherry, but this provides no real structure or aesthetic benefit, but is sometimes done.
Stainless steel is a novel material that provides the benefits of not expanding and contracting with heat, cold, and moisture, while at the same time being really easy to clean and even sterilize. Stainless steel cabinets for residential kitchens do not look industrial. The only real aesthetic drawback is they really show smudges and fingerprints.
