I’m describing three kinds of light in this post, but the focus is really three different uses of light, not types of light per se.
Ambient lighting is the all over background light that is everywhere.
Task lighting is lighting on specific areas for task or work areas (chopping, rolling dough, etc). Think spot lighting.
Accent lighting is lighting on specific things whose purpose is to highlight the thing, artwork for example. Think flood lighting.
Kitchen Accent Lighting
The best quality light is sun light. Three solutions for sun light are large windows, skylights and solar tubes.
The picture shows a kitchen with vaulted ceilings and very large windows allowing a lot of natural light. For some houses such a setup is not practical.
Skylights lend themselves to ceilings that “touch the outside” in a manner of speaking. In most of our homes what is above the kitchen ceiling is the attic.
That is a setup that is well suited for solar tubes, such as is shown below.
Solar tubes have a number of advantages over both large windows and sky lights, one being they’re fairly inexpensive, and the other being they’re easy to keep clean due to them being so small. Once a year or so you hose them off to rid them of dust and debris, and that’s it.
Large windows and skylights need to be periodically cleaned and it’s time consuming to do so (windows especially).
