A prior post described how quality ambient kitchen lighting is provided well by large windows, skylights, and or solar tubes, and how solar tubes have some definite advantages in that they are the least expensive solution and have the lowest maintenance (cleaning) requirements.
This post discusses kitchen task lighting and accent lighting.
Kitchen Task Lighting
Task light, as the name implies, is lighting for where tasks are performed. In the picture on the top right the pendant lighting over the island is task lighting. It provides lighting for where food is prepared and eaten.
Track lighting is another practical solution for task lighting as it’s fairly easy to direct where the light shines and track lighting can be changed easily simply by reaching up and repositioning the light. However some people dislike the look of the track lighting tracks on their ceilings.
In terms of bulb type, halogen bulbs lend themselves very well to task lighting as they produce a very bright light from a very small bulb.
The ultimate in kitchen task lighting is to install light fixtures on the underside of your upper cabinets so your countertops can all be well lit, as shown in the picture below.
Kitchen Accent Lighting
Accent lighting is conceptually similar to task lighting, but rather than light up a task area you’re lighting up something you wish to be more visible, such as a work of art, a section of wall with a decorative tile pattern, etc.
Because the location of where things we accent go doesn’t change, good types of fixtures for accent lighting are small recessed cans that shine at a angle (rather than straight down).
I am again a fan of halogen bulbs for accent light for the same reason I find them useful for task lighting.
