The prior post gave a historical perspective on why our kitchens tend to be the center of our homes.
From here I focus on things you can do to make your kitchen a better center of your home.
This post of course assumes you are planning a remodel and that what you currently have is not the only way it can be.
The Solera Group provides expert kitchen remodeling services in the greater San Jose metro area
Make a list of activities done there
And please do not leave out the obvious:
- Morning coffee
- Prepare food
- Eat food
- Message center
- Homework station
- Children’s art projects
- Watch TV
- Entertain guests
- Whatever else you and your family do in the kitchen
Design layouts with all activities in mind
You’ll need to play with this a bit. I suggest going so far as to making a drawing of your kitchens outer walls with graph paper, then making cut outs of various things (fridge, center island, stove, cabinets, etc) and literally moving the pieces around on paper.
With modern kitchens layouts almost always having an island in the middle, you will probably find you are able to fit every desired activity into your kitchen layout.
If you find that is not the case, then it’s time to start making trade offs. If trade offs are necessary, go back to your list and give every activity a priority and allow no ties. The not allowing of ties is important because it forces you to prioritize.
