Plumbing – Los Altos – P-traps
This article is part of a series, whose lead article is Plumbing 101.
The P-trap is the dip in the pipe you find under all your sink drains.
Although you might not’t see it, you also have one for your washing machine drain, and one is built into each of your toilets.
In combination with the vent stack, the P-trap is what keeps the sewer gases out of your home.
Our sewers are an eco-system of all kinds of disgusting life forms.
Like all life forms, they emit waste, some of which is in the form of gas.
This gas has to go somewhere, and you don’t want it in your home, as it smells bad.
The dip in each of your P-traps permanently contains water, and this water acts as a vapor barrier for the sewer gases.
Because the sewer vapors do not travel through the water, they do not enter your homes.
The vent stack ensure the air pressure on each side if the P-trap is equal, ensuring the water doesn’t get sucked away by a slight vacuum.
