Plumbing – Palo Alto – CPVC Pipe
This article is part of a series, whose lead article is Plumbing 101.
CPVC stands for Chlorinated Poly Vinyl Chloride.
CPVC stands up much better when carrying hot water, which is why is it approved for inside plumbing use, whereas PVC is approved for outside irrigation use.
The main advantage of CPVC is the ease of installation; no soldering is required, the junctions are secured with a special glue.
There seem to be one main disadvantages, which is not even necessarily true (I found no data to back up the claim), but it is that CPVC is less durable than copper and is likely to need repairing before copper pipe would.
Personally, I want copper pipe for my home because if any material from the pipes enter the drinking water, small doses of copper salts are good for us, whereas the plastics are not.
