Solera Home Improvements provides you with plumbing services in San Jose, CA and surrounding metro area
This article is part of a mini-series, whose lead article is Clearing a Clogged Drain.
Sometimes when the Zip-It tool or an enzyme drain cleaner do not do the trick, you must get under the sink and take apart the P-trap to clear the drain.
The picture on the right shows the different parts and there really are not that many.
The only tools you should need are:
- Rubber kitchen gloves (to get a better grip)
- Channel locks (available at every hardware store)
- A basin (to catch the water in the P trap)
First, put the basin or other container under the P-trap (it’s always full of water, but especially now).
Using the channel locks, slowly loosen the nuts that hold the pieces together, one at a time. DO NOT FORCE ANYTHING!!
As water starts to leak out, let it and wait patiently
As the flow of water slows, loosen the nuts more.
Once the flow of water stops, remove the P-Trap, put it in the basin, take it outside, empty it, and hose it off to clear the clog.
Go back inside and put it all back together, doing things in the reverse order.
