Plumbing – San Jose – Vent Stacks
This article is part of a series, whose lead article is Plumbing 101.
The vent stack is a critical part of your drain system which most people are unaware of.
Effectively, it is your drain line protruding up the inside of your wall, and through your roof.
It allows for the easy transfer of air from the outside to the drain system and from the drain system to the outside.
Our sewers are full of life that smells really bad.
We don’t want this smell in our homes.
For this reason, the P-trap was invented.
The picture on the right shows three P traps, which are nothing more than dips in the pipe which always hold water.
This water forms the vapor barrier for the sewer gases.
As sewer gases expand and are released, they need somewhere to go.
They escape the sewers through our vent stacks, and the P-traps prevent them from entering your home.
The vent stacks also ensure the air pressure on each side of the P-trap is equal.
Without a vent stack they would not be equal.
The air pressure on the drain side would always be at a lower pressure than the air pressure in the home.
This would suck the water out of the P-trap, thereby losing the vapor barrier effect the water provides.
