Plumbing – Saratoga – Angle Stops
This article is part of a series, whose lead article is Plumbing 101.
The valves under your sinks and behind your toilets are called Right Angle Stops, or Angle Stops.
In time, they do fail, and do need to be replaced after several years.
When you need new ones:
- You must generally turn off the water to the entire house, as there is rarely a valve between the main house valve and the angle stops.
- You must get a replacement that specifically fits the types of pipe it connects to.
- Angle stops for galvanized pipes are not the same as angle stops for copper pipes
If you live in a townhouse or condo where shutting off the water is something you schedule with your neighbors, if you ever find yourself scheduling time to change one, take that time to change them all.
The odds are they were installed around the same time and if one is failing today, more will fail soon.
We strongly recommend you put in the quarter turn style, as they are both easier to turn off and on again, but mostly because they use a ball style valve which is a better valve mechanism as well.
