Remodeling services of Solera Home Improvement are available to you in and around the city of Los Gatos
Remodeling | Los Gatos | Materials | Environmental Impact
All of the materials you buy for your remodeling project come from somewhere and are manufactured.
If you want to know your products have minimal environmental impact, what can you do?
Unfortunately there is no industry standard measure for this, so you have to do some legwork on your own.
Ask for sources
If someone claims “no VOCs” or “uses less water” or “renewable resource” ask for sources to substantiate those claims.
If there are no sources, the claims may not be valid.
There are several labels that do mean someting:
EnergyStar is an EPA designation that means a device (generally appliance) is rated and has a label for estimated energy use.
WaterSense is an EPA designation that means the manufacturer has a partnership agreement in place with the EPA.
Forest Stewardship Council provides a designation after they have certified the manufactures supply chain or “chain of custody” through the manufacturing process.
Green Seal is a designation provided by Green Seal (a non profit organization) stating the product meets their criteria as “green”.
And there are many more….
It would be nice if there was an easy way to verify low environmental impact, but what we have are many different labels.
When you see a label, ask what it means and go to the certificate issuer website to check for yourself.
Ask about relevance
If someone promotes “asbestos free” or “lead free” and you think that is the norm, ask.
If someone is promoting something that is required by law as a green benefit, ask them why.
Trust your instincts
If someone promoting green benefits makes you uneasy, listen to that and ask them all the questions list above.
If their answers do not give you comfort, work with someone else.
I hope this information is useful to you in planning and doing your remodeling project, and speaking of your remodeling project, we would very much appreciate an opportunity to be of service…..
