When you are remodeling your home, what can you do to reduce your future water consumption?
Everyone knows about low flow toilets, low flow shower heads, etc, but most people do not realize that about half of all water use in your standard suburban home is used for the landscaping.
Here is a chart showing the breakdown, and here is a link to the webpage the article comes from.
As you can see, the majority of water used is outdoors for landscaping.
So although installing low flow devices and ensuring you have no leaks are good things to do, you more drastically cut your water use by reducing needs to landscape water.
There are two mains ways to do this.
Change to low water plants
Any garden supply place can easily identify low water plants for you.
When you plant low water plants, you use less water.
Gray Water Reclamation
This is a little less straight forward.
Basically you create some form of reservoir into which you drain all your “gray water”, which you then use to water your landscaping.
The old fashioned rain barrel is one example of this.
You can divert all your gutters into this reservoir.
When initial building or drastically remodeling a home, you can separate the drains so that toilets drain into the sewer system and sinks and rain gutters drain into the gray water reservoir.
I hope this information is useful to you as you are planning your remodel.
