When looking for a bathroom remodeler in the San Jose, CA metro area (or anywhere in CA for that matter), there are several criteria that matter.
Important point #1 – Is the remodeling company properly licensed?
I wish to clarify that licensing is really all about insurance, by which I mean for you.
The California Contractor State License Board (CSLB) has established minimum criteria contractors must meet in order to do business in California. Those criteria exist for your protection.
They are not all encompassing. I have met licensed contractors who do substandard work. However when the contractor you use is licensed, you have recourse if there is ever a dispute. You can file a claim with the CSLB.
If the contractor you’re using is not licensed, they may have committed a criminal offense by taking your money, but the CSLB can do nothing to help you. Those situations become police matters.
How do you know your contractor is properly licensed? You check!
You can quickly check the status of the license at the Instant License Check page of the Contractor State License Board website.
Be wary of anything that looks out of the ordinary and never be afraid to ask your contractor to clarify any questions you have about the status of their license.
If a contractor avoids clarifying your questions about their license, find a new contractor. If something seems wrong and it can’t be explained to your satisfaction, something is probably wrong.
The check you write must be to the name of the company on the license. If you are asked to write a check to any other name, you should refuse. If the contractor insists the check be written to a name other than the name on the license, report them to the Contractor State License Board.
