Check Your Contractors References
When evaluating a bathroom remodeler in the San Jose metro area (or anywhere in CA), please consider that remodeling is not a commodity, but rather is craftsmanship.
The best way to know the quality of the work you are likely to receive is to know the quality of work your prospective contractor has done in the past.
We have all been trained to ask for references, but very few of us actually check them.
Ask for at least three references.
Ask for references for whom the contractor has done work similar to the work you need.
When speaking to them, perhaps the single most important questions to ask are:
- Please tell me something that went wrong? and
- How did it get resolved?
On every remodel project, questions, issues, and decisions that need to be made simply come up.
Some of these are problems where a solution needs to be found in order to keep the project on track. Some of these are needed to satisfy you that things ARE on track even when they are.
How your contractor responds when things go wrong (or there is a concern of such) is as important, maybe even more important, then the quality of the work they do for you.
How do you find out how your contractor is likely to respond when an issue arises? Ask their references!
