Online Reputation Does Matter
When selecting a bathroom remodeler or looking for someone to clear a clogged drain in the San Jose metro area, the last important consideration is their online reputation.
Check Yelp, Google reviews, check other sources of online reviews.
Be aware that online reputations can be manipulated, both by referral sites and by service providers.
You may have heard the accusations that Yelp offers to promote positive reviews and make negative reviews harder to see once you sign an advertising contract with them.
Equally manipulative is there are services out there who will provide a slow steady steam of positive reviews in exchange for payment.
As a consumer you can’t really know what part a companies online reviews are real and what parts are not.
However you can still see patterns and trends. If you see a negative review, see if the company responded and how the company responded. I know contractors who have negative reviews from people they never provided services to. Sounds weird, but it happens. See both sides of the discussion.
What you are looking for here is a sense of how the company conducts themselves. You obviously want to see many more positive reviews than negative review, and for any negative review you want to understand what happened.
A final point is the lack of reviews is not necessarily a bad thing for you. Some customers do not submit reviews when things go great, and some contractors who do great work for you were the employee of someone else until fairly recently (they’re just starting out on their own, and as such their new business has not had time to collect reviews.
