This post specifically discusses the advantages, disadvantages, and costs of natural stone countertops.
Natural stone countertops are Granite, Marble, and Quartz.
They are cut in quarries, moved to fabrication facilities where they are cut and polished and made into counter top materials. When you buy them, you view the material without your cutouts (for your, faucet, etc) as these differ between different kitchen layouts.
While there are differences between the three materials, they all have the same general set of advantages and disadvantages.
- Beautiful to look at.
- Can accommodate hot pots and pans (not too hot).
- Relative inexpensive, at least compared to engineered stone.
- Requires occasional maintenance to reseal. Natural stone is porous and if you fail to reseal before its needed the stone becomes susceptible to damage from water or staining from dark liquids (red wine for example).
Expect to pay between $70 to $95 a square foot including installation.
