Typically labor is a larger share of the cost than materials (with higher end materials this is not always true).
Perhaps there are tasks you know how to do. Perhaps you now people who can guide you through some.
What are the tasks that home owners sometimes do themselves in order to save money?
The Single Most Common: Demo
While it’s not true that demo is “unskilled”, it takes less skill to do demo than it does to do electrical or plumbing. To fully strip a bathroom typically takes 2 or 3 days.
You’ll need an ability to haul debris to the dump, a power screwdriver, appropriate pry bars and hammers, and of course appropriate safety equipment (gloves, safety glasses, etc). If you do this yourself, take your time and go slow. Typically if you have to force something to get it out, you’re doing it wrong.
If you are unlucky enough to need to demo a cast iron tub, you’ll need a moving blanket and a sledge hammer. This is one area where pure brute strength comes in very handy.
The video below shows you how to do it, but COVER IT WITH A MOVING BLANKET! Bits of metal can “fly away” so keep them contained.
