Bathroom Countertops, Options, Styles, and Choices
Your choices for bathroom countertops are extensive and almost overwhelming.
Since I look at the world in terms of what does it take to maintain it, I’ve sorted the options into low maintenance and high maintenance. I initially thought of doing low, medium, and high, but this so subjective I decided that is too deep a level of nuance for this discussion.
Below is listing and brief summary of options. For more detail about any specific option, select one of the links below.
What makes these options higher maintenance is the MUST be sealed and periodically resealed. I repeat MUST. Natural stone, and the grout lines between ceramic tile are porous, which means water seeps through them. What prevents water from seeping through them is the sealant applied as the last layer.
When that sealant wears out, water will seep through. At best this will permanently stain your natural stone and deteriorate your grout. At worst it will moisten the substrate (typically fiberboard) and start it rotting.
If you select one of these options, you must understand the need for periodic resealing and commit to it.
Lower maintenance is not the right phrase, these are actually all very maintenance free surfaces. Quartz is an engineered stone, which is a put in place and forget about it type of surface. It never needs resealing and there are no grout lines. Glass, concrete, and composite are maintenance free for different reasons.
The Absolute Lowest Maintenance
If the options above are all virtually no maintenance why is stainless steel considered the lowest maintenance? Because it is incredibly easy to disinfect. That is in fact why you find stainless steel counters in hospitals and commercial kitchens. Not because they’re any low maintenance than other options, but because they clean up and disinfect the easiest.
