This post is one in a series on remodeling small bathrooms and part of a sub-series on how to evaluate and select your contractor. For either of the lead posts, please select one of the links in the prior sentence.
This post focuses on why it’s so important to find a contractor you can work with, and how you go about doing that.
The Solera Group provides expert bathroom remodeling services in the greater San Jose metro area.
I’m fond of using analogies to make a point. I’ve been known to say that selecting a contractor is like playing the dating game. Knowing which people not to get involved is much easier than dealing with the ramifications of a relationship going bad.
Having said that, it may be more accurate that you’re adopting a distant family member, a cousin or uncle perhaps. For however long your job lasts this person and possibly their employees, will be in your home almost every day.
Questions will come up (from both you and your contractor). Decisions will need to be made. Issues will arise that need discussion and resolution.
It’s critical you and your contractor have a solid working relationship.
The best way to understand how a potential contractor feels about the need for effective communications is to ask them. Tell them your concern, then see and feel how they respond.
If for whatever reason you get a bad feeling about how someone responds, listen to it.
It’s not enough for a contractor to be technically competent. They must also deal with people (you and your family) effectively.
As different people have different styles, a contractor who may be a great fit for your sister in law may be a terrible fit for you, and visa versa.
So before signing a contract, make sure the contractor is someone you feel you can work with and who is willing to work with you.
