Cartridge Valve Faucets
This post is part of a series about bathroom remodeling (we service the greater San Jose CA metro area), as well as part of a sub-series on bathroom faucets. To access either of the lead posts please select one of the links below.
Valve Type = Reliability
There are four different types of valves used in faucets (bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, event outside garden hose bibs). Listed in the order of reliability, they are:
This post focuses on cartridge valve faucets. The focus of this post is how to fix them because if you’re doing a bathroom remodel I suggest you not install one. They’re OK, but the ball valve and the disc valve are more reliable and need fixing less often.
So if you have a cartridge faucet I’m assuming you need to fix it.
The image below shows how easy it is. Your remove the handle and the valve cover, then remove the old cartridge (also called a valve stem) and insert the new one.
However, different faucets require different cartridges, so how do you know which one you need.
- You shut off the water first.
- You remove the old cartridge (it unscrews).
- You take it to the hardware store and tell them you need one exactly like it.
- You take the new one home and install it.
NOTE: Do not throw the old one away until the new one is installed and working.
OTHER NOTE: Although it is possible to repair cartridges, it’s not worth the time. The cost of the rebuilt kit is maybe $8. The cost of the new cartridge is $20, and by replacing the entire cartridge you will not only save yourself time, you’ll get it fixed right the first time. Sometimes rebuilds have not worked, requiring replacement of the entire cartridge anyway.
If you’re replacing the faucet either because it simply needs replacing or because you’re doing a full bathroom remodel, do yourself a favor and get a ball or disc faucet to replace it with. They’re much more reliable.
