How does one best start their small bathroom remodeling project?
The Solera Group provides expert bathroom remodeling services in the greater San Jose metro area.
What is design?
I looked up a few technical definitions, and they don’t work for me. Yes design is a process of documenting a desired end result in a drawing form. Yes design is a plan and intention behind an action. Yes design is deciding upon a look and feel.
This is my definition… Design is the process of translating what I call “raw ideas” into something that can be brought into existence.
Design is not about having it all. Design is about limited choices, limiting options, to what really works.
A good designer does not pretend your bathroom is an empty canvas with infinite possibility. It never is. Design is always limited by physical science, technology, and practical reality (someone may think a counter top hanging from sky hooks would look and feel great, but it will never work in real life).
Design is the process of taking your needs and desires for your future bathroom, and coming up with something concrete, something definite, than can be handed to someone else (your contractor) who can read it, understand it, and implement it.
Design is a process, not a thing.
The process is discussed in two prior posts:
I know I’m probably being repetitive here, but this point is so important I wish it to have emphasis.
Design is the process of removing choices that do not make sense, thereby leaving you with fewer but more practical choices which do make sense.
Make sense of what?
- Space utilization
- Feel of materials
- Etc, etc….
For every aspect of design you have what I might call “too many options”. Too many options leads to difficulty in making decisions. By eliminating options that are impractical to you (but which may be ideal for someone else), you make your decision making process easier.
Other important questions that are addressed in other posts are:
- Should you hire a professional interior designer?
- Why and how do you design around “anchor items” (which is called flexible design)?
- How do you enhance your room through accessorizing?
