This post is one in a series on remodeling small bathrooms and part of a sub-series on how to evaluate and select your contractor. For either of the lead posts, please select one of the links in the prior sentence.
This post discusses why it is so important that your contractor be properly licensed.
In the state of California, a contractor must be properly licensed by the State of California in order to perform any home repair or home improvement job whose value exceeds $500.
The Solera Group provides expert bathroom remodeling services in the greater San Jose metro area.
Contractor licensing demonstrates a minimum level of experience and knowledge in the building trades, and an understanding of the legal requires related to bonding, insurance, building codes, etc.
Above and beyond this, in the event you made a bad decision and hired a bad contractor, the Contractor State License Board (CSLB) is available to help you have things made right when you’re working with a licensed contractor. When you’re not, you only recourse is to sue them, which is costly both in terms of money and time.
As the penalty of contracting without a license is severe (including jail time) losing a license is a catastrophic event to remodeling contractors. It effectively prevents them from earning a living.
So to ensure you have the CSLB available to you if and when you need them, ensure the contractor you use is properly licensed.
My next post discusses how contractor licensing works in the State of California. What (who actually) exactly is licensed?
