These requirements fall into the following categories:
In order for a contractor in the State of California to do any jobs whose total value is in excess of $500 the contractor must be properly licensed.
General Liability Insurance
This may sound strange, but home improvement contractors are not required to carry commercial general liability insurance. It is a good practice. It is a common practice. It is not required by law.
However, if they do not, any losses incurred for any reason will be covered by your home owners insurance.
If the home improvement contracting firm has employees above and beyond any of the owners of record, they are required by law to carry workers compensation insurance.
As part of your due diligence, as to see proof of their insurance. If they do not carry either general liability or workers compensation insurance, ask why.
This should not an automatic deal killer, but should require extra consideration, as when your contractor does not carry this insurance, your homeowners insurance may incur liability if there are any losses.
