A framed sink is one in which some material, that contrasts with both the sink and the counter top, is installed in such a way as to create a visual break between the sink and the counter top. It becomes a frame, in a very real way.
The framing of sinks is purely for visual or aesthetic purposes. The sink frame provides no practical value and in fact creates a low physical break between the counter top and the sink.
If you’re into low maintenance as I am, this prevents you from simply sweeping water from the counter top into the sink with you hand.
For those of us who like the transition from the countertop to the sink to be flat, the same visual effect can be achieved (sort of) with some under mount sinks. Please refer to the image below.
As you can see, the sink has an appearance that provides a visual contrast while still providing a flat transition from counter top to sink.
