This post is one in a series on remodeling small bathrooms. As well as one within the sub-series on your options for bathroom remodeling materials. It is also part of a sub-series about bathtubs. To access any of the lead posts, please select one of the links in the prior sentences.
I feel compelled to state that I myself have never been a fan of whirlpool bathtubs, as that may show in how I word this post. If you absolutely love them, more power to you. I’ve always enjoyed hot water without the air flow and bubbles. Not sure why.
The Solera Group provides expert bathroom remodeling services in the greater San Jose metro area.
Maybe it’s because I’m a low maintenance type of person and I feel the effort needed to clean and maintain them is too much.
Anyway, if you just absolutely have to have one, please understand the following…
The air flow is created by an electric motor
Whirlpool tubs require a dedicated circuit. This is a circuit that runs directly from the electrical distribution panel to the tub area and has nothing else on it. In general a 15A circuit is required. For some larger tubs a 20A circuit is needed. I suspect for the largest (sits four people) tubs, even larger circuits are needed.
Jets need to be periodically replaced
Sooner or later one will break in some way. Before you commit to a tub be sure you understand how involved that process will be. If replacing one jet requires pulling the tub and re-installing it, you probably won’t do it. So make sure you get a tub that is easy to service.
The motor will one day fail
And it will need to be replaced. As the location of the motor is known before the tub is installed, be sure you create some form off access port so when the time comes you can simply open the access port to get to the motor.
If you’re really lucky on the other side of the wall will be a closet so the tubs motor access panel would be at the back of a bedroom closet. If you’re not really lucky you’ll need to make it as pretty as possible.
Although I would never install one in my house, if whirlpool tubs are your thing, just be sure you understand the maintenance realities listed above and design their existence into your bathroom remodeling design.
