Undermount Sinks and Stone Countertops
Why do I list undermount sinks along with stone countertops? Because they go together like peanut butter and jelly, potatoes and buttermilk, raw fish and rice, and corn and beans. Which is to say, they just do.
An undermount sink is one that mounts to the counter top from underneath, which is why it is called an undermount sink. As such, the hole in the countertop that the sink sits under must have a highly polished edge. If not it will look strange and ugly. The materials that allow you to have the highly polished edge are natural stone and engineered stone.
As you can see from the diagram below, they are held to the bottom of the countertop via brackets made specially for this purpose.
Why do I personally like them so much? Because I dislike there being a lip between the countertop and the sink. The lip prevents me from sweeping water from the countertop into the sink and (in my mind) makes the sink and countertop more difficult to keep clean.
Undermount sinks with engineered stone countertops are the ultimate for the low maintenance crowd (like me).
