Bathroom Remodeling: Good Ideas (con’t)
Provide adequate and appropriate lighting
Ambient lighting is the all over everywhere lighting that should seem to come from no where and everywhere.
Accent lighting is lighting that is focused on things (plants, artwork, etc).
Task lighting is lighting that is focused where tasks (grooming mostly) are performed.
You need appropriate levels of all three, but not too much of any. You also need to adjust your lighting to be appropriate for your surfaces.
If you have porous earth toned surfaces, lights won’t glare as much. If you shiner surfaces (as in the picture in this post) you’ll want appropriately dimmer bulbs to go with the glare from the shinier surfaces.

Do not skimp on ventilation
Nothing will harm your wood framed home more than small amounts of water over long periods of time. I can tell you some real horror stories if you’re interested.
You may have heard a rule of thumb that a bathroom exhaust fan should perform 8 air changes an hour. That is one every 7 1/2 minutes. Not bad, but also not good. If you can, install a bathroom exhaust fan that is twice as store to complete an air change in half the time.
How do you know your exhaust fan is powerful enough? When you get out of the shower and the mirror is not fogged. If it moves the moist air out that fast, don’t worry about water damage from standing moisture.
