When your home needs a new roof, that is the time to do things that will save you energy and money in the future.
You will pay a little more to save money in the future, but when you’re re-roofing anyway, that is time the time to do it.
These “cool roofs” do look good, but more importantly, they keep the sun’s radiant energy out (at least most of it) thereby keeping your attic cool, which in turn keeps you home cool, which in turn requires less energy (air conditioning) to cool your home. Maybe once you install a cool roof, you can turn that air conditioner off forever.
There are a wide variety of cool roof materials, and there is a trade group to help verify claims. It is named the Cool Roof Rating Council. They have a web page where you can determine what cool roof products meet the needs of your house (shingles vs tiles, different colors, etc).
Examples of products or classes of products that help are:
- Radiant Barriers: This is basically a form of reflective foil. It comes in one of two forms:
- As roof sheathing (plywood or fiberboard) that has one shiny reflective side
- As sheeting which you install in your attic
- Roof shingles
- Roof coverings
You may not be willing to rush out and do this, but if every building on Earth were to paint their roof white, we would reduce global building energy use by 2%. So something as boring as covering or coating can help.
In the spirit of full disclosure, we do not currently have any roofing companies in our network, so this article is purely for information only. However we have done (and do) considerable bathroom and kitchen remodels
When you need help with a remodeling project, please consider using one of our network members. We only bring in good people.
